La Joya Escondida
(Educational- Spanish language learning game)
Message:
Recent studies have shown that while 20% of students are enrolled in foreign language courses, only 7% of these students (1.5% of all students) end up with self-professed proficiency in their chosen second language in adulthood. This game seeks to increase this percentage by boosting the retention and interest a student has in a language right at the inception of their learning. This will be effective because it has been proven that games increase the retention of learned skills and material.

Demographic:

This game is for junior-high to high school (12-18) aged students who are starting or are about to start the language learning classes that are required in many American high schools, as well as anyone looking for a foundational knowledge of Spanish.

Competition Analysis:

There are many language learning games for kids, but they are mostly web-games or apps, and are not generally narrative based. There are also many point-and-click narrative-based games such as the Nancy Drew series or Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, but they are not necessarily educational. I think overall there is a nice open spot where narrative, education, and lightly choice-based gameplay could be combined.
Gameplay:
The game will be a point and click Nancy Drew/ Indiana Jones-esque game. The player will navigate through locations across South America looking for a long lost valuable jewel. There will be one main storyline path, with the game possibly ending at many points based on the player’s decisions and how well they complete the language challenges. The game will work through presenting the player with short progressive Spanish lessons (vocabulary, phrases, grammar, etc.) which are then immediately put into practice in the point and click ‘world’ in the form of multiple choice conversations with NPCs that have to be completed to successfully make it to the next section (getting through an airport, making friends with a contact so they will give you information, etc.).
There are five levels and a sixth post-level: Airport (two parts), Street, Bar, Bar Basement, and Warehouse.
